Converting VMWare to VirtualBox

Post migrated from my old site:

Found most of this information on:…

When you have multiple files for your harddisk (like me), use (on Windows):

c:\Program Files\VMWare\VMWare Workstation\vmware-vdiskmanager -r old_hd.vmdk -t 0 new_hd.vmdk

Next, convert the vmdk file to a raw image by making use of qemu-img:

qemu-img convert new_hd.vmdk new_hd.bin

Next step is to convert the bin file to  a virtualbox .vdi file by making use of VBoxManage:

VBoxManage convertfromraw new_hd.bin new_hd.vdi

Next you can use your new image to set up a virtual machine in VirtualBox

Networking for VirtualBox: port forwarding

Post migrated from my old site:

If you would like to set up networking in VirtualBox so that the guest can still access the network and the host/other machines can access a port on the guest (for instance Apache), use NAT port forwarding for this:

Using USB devices with VirtualBox on Ubuntu 11.10

Find instructions here, also for other Ubuntu versions:

On Oneiric, add your user to the ‘vboxusers’ group.

VirtualBox: Ubuntu guest loosing eth0 networking interface

Finally found a solution for the problem that Ubuntu guests sometimes loose the eth0 networking interface. Solution can be found here:

I simply renamed the file and rebooted by:

cd /etc/udev/rules.d
sudo mv 70-persistent-net.rules 70-persistent-net.rules_old
sudo reboot

VirtualBox 4.1: How to clone a virtual machine?

Update 2011/08/05:
Of course, I should have added that right-click on the host > Clone also works.
