Converting VMWare to VirtualBox

Post migrated from my old site:

Found most of this information on:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuMagazine/HowTo/Switching_From_VMWare_To_Vi…

When you have multiple files for your harddisk (like me), use (on Windows):

c:\Program Files\VMWare\VMWare Workstation\vmware-vdiskmanager -r old_hd.vmdk -t 0 new_hd.vmdk

Next, convert the vmdk file to a raw image by making use of qemu-img:

qemu-img convert new_hd.vmdk new_hd.bin

Next step is to convert the bin file to  a virtualbox .vdi file by making use of VBoxManage:

VBoxManage convertfromraw new_hd.bin new_hd.vdi

Next you can use your new image to set up a virtual machine in VirtualBox

Networking for VirtualBox: port forwarding

Post migrated from my old site:

If you would like to set up networking in VirtualBox so that the guest can still access the network and the host/other machines can access a port on the guest (for instance Apache), use NAT port forwarding for this:

Nice Excel trick

Post migrated from my old site:

Thanks to http://www.vistaclues.com/reader-question-open-excel-on-multiple-monitors/:
If you would like to show two Excel documents in separate windows (because you are using multiple monitors), open multiple copies of Excel by holding down the control key when clicking Excel. Drop the documents in the Windows and voila…
An even nicer trick of course is called OpenOffice.org.

Mail merging e-mail in Outlook

Splitting and catting a tar file into 2 Gb chunks

Post migrated from my old site:

If you for some weird reason (which I have) would like to back large files up to a FAT32 volume and need maximum 2 Gb files, or for some other reason would like to chop up your backup file into chunks, use the following command:

tar -cvaf - *|split -b 2000m - volume.tar

To unpack use:

cat volume.tar* | tar xv

And wait a long time…
